What you get

One registration. From £29.

  • The colour recorded as an exact value, held for 20 years
  • A numbered certificate by email, to print or keep
  • Their name and code listed in the public register, on its own page
  • Free colour change within 28 days
  • One shade each — nobody can be given the same one twice
  • 30% off everything for the next 30 days — as many times as you like

At checkout you can drop the code and hold the bare name, keep the registration for ever rather than 20 years, or have it printed and framed. Anything printed can only be posted to a UK address; everything else arrives by email, anywhere.

Questions

Before you give one

Tell us within 28 days and we'll move the registration to a different one, free. The name stays, the registry number stays, only the colour changes. Once per registration.

We'd rather you had the right colour than a refund.

Not exactly, and we'd rather say so before you buy. Screens make colour by emitting light and paper makes it by absorbing light, so no print is ever an exact copy of a screen — and every screen is set up differently, so your phone and their laptop won't agree either.

What is exact is the registration. The colour is recorded as a precise value that never changes, and that value is what's yours. If you print the certificate at home, what comes out is your printer's interpretation of that value — usually some way off, and nothing to worry about. The registration hasn't changed.

No — and we'd rather say so plainly. This is a novelty gift and a private register that we maintain. It carries no legal or scientific standing, and it doesn't affect trademarks, Pantone references or anything else. What it is: a permanent, searchable public record with their name on it, and a rather lovely certificate.

16,777,216 in the standard 24-bit range — every combination of red, green and blue a screen can display. We register each hex value once and once only, which is why nobody can ever be given the same colour twice.

Every registration carries a five-character code, which is what makes it unique — so two people can both choose Rosie's Gold and each has their own. At checkout you can pay to drop the code and hold the bare name instead, but only if nobody has taken it. There is exactly one of each, so it goes to whoever asks first.

We colour-manage every print, but paper reflects light where a screen emits it, so it will never be an exact copy of what you saw. The registration itself is exact and never changes. If the print isn't right we will reprint it once, free, within 28 days.

Yes, and that's deliberate. Every registration carries a five-character code — so one shade might be Rosie's Gold F2K9M and another Rosie's Gold 4TB7X. The code is what's unique; the name is yours to choose freely. It means you're never told the name you wanted has gone.

A few hundred, yes, and we'd rather say which. The Registrar holds back the pure primaries, the exact greys and the precise midpoints — the handful of values that are mathematically special rather than merely nice — along with colours the world already associates with a particular company. Those last ones are simple prudence: registering a famous brand colour to a stranger would help nobody.

You will never bump into them. The wheel steps around a held shade the same way it steps around a registered one, by an amount no eye could detect. The number currently held is shown at the foot of the register.

No. The wheel won't come to rest on a registered shade — if you land on one, it moves to the nearest free one automatically, by an amount no eye could detect. You can't accidentally buy a duplicate.

Yes. Choose “send it to another address” and nothing reaches them at all — the certificate comes to whichever inbox you give, ready to print, wrap or hand over when you like.

Yes, and a good number of people do. Register the shade in their name, or as “In memory of —”. If you'd like the certificate worded differently, write to us after ordering and we'll set it however you need, at no extra cost.
